Men's basic
College Basketball Rules

Men's basic college basketball rules are different from The NBA and women's basketball rules.



1. Length of game: two 20 minute halves
2. Overtime: 5 minutes
3. Length of halftime: 15 minutes.

4. Shot clock: 35 seconds
5. Shot clock reset: when field goal attempt hits rim

6. Back court violation: ball must be in front court before 10 seconds
7. Game clock: stops after successful field goal during the last minute of the second half and the last minute of overtime

8. Player foul limit: 5
9. Bonus free throw: after 7th foul per half, player gets one and one. After 10th foul per half, player gets two free throws.
10. Number of players permitted on the free throw lane: 6 (four defensive and two offensive players

11. Jump ball: teams alternate possession after opening tip off
12. Legal alley-oop: yes
13. Touch ball on or above rim: no
14. Closely guarded for 5 seconds: yes, while holding or dribbling the ball
15. Number of referees: three


16. Traveling:
a. Player with the ball cannot move both feet without dribbling
b. Player cannot dribble with both hands
c. Player cannot hold the ball between dribbles
17. Technical foul:
a. Can be called for arguing with a referee or fighting with another player
b. penalty results in free throw

18. Timeouts - men's basic college basketball rules:
a. Non televised game: four 75 second and two 30 second timeouts per game.
b. Televised game: one 60 second and four 30 second timeouts per game. Unused 60 second and maximum of three unused 30 second timeouts carry over to second half.
c. Overtime: one additional 30 second and unused second half 30 second timeouts carry over.
d. Timeouts called by: head coach or player in game.

19. Equipment - men's basic college basketball rules:

d. Height of rim: 10 feet above court
e. Size of rim: 18" diameter, 5/8" round steel bar
f. Court length: 94' x 50'
g. Three point field goal distance: 19' 9"
